What Is The Bow South Expedition And What We Are Doing

What is the Bow South Expedition and what we are doing: The Bow South Expedition is a charity kayak paddle down the entire lower Colorado River. This year's expedition is being held as a fundraiser for Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence. In the years 2014 to 2017 we began the expedition at Hoover Dam and followed the river 340 miles south to where the Colorado River abruptly ends at Morelos Dam on the U.S ./ Mexico border. For the 2018 expedition the opportunity has been presented to join a private trip at Diamond Creek in the Grand Canyon and follow the river to Pierce Ferry just beyond the western end of the Grand Canyon. From Pierce Ferry we'll continue on through Lake Mead and follow the river for another 400+ miles south to Mexico. Along the way we'll descend the last 55 miles of the Grand Canyon and paddle through 3 wildlife refuges, 3 giant lakes (reservoirs), portage 7 dams, and end our journey at Morelos Dam on the U.S. / Mexico border.

Only a handful of people have ever been documented canoeing or kayaking the entire lower Colorado River in one long trip. Team members that are kayaking the entirety of this expedition will be paddling an average of 20+ miles a day, almost every day, for 4 weeks. Additionally, sections of the river flow through some remote areas, multiple land jurisdictions, and an ever shrinking river that adds to the challenges presented to our team members.

This expedition is entirely self-funded by our team members. We do not seek sponsors nor solicit donations for the purposes of funding the expedition itself. All money that is donated from individuals or companies are made directly to the benefitting charities via our fundraising webpage(s). Whether you make a flat donation of money or the amount is based on how many miles we paddle is entirely up to you. If you decide to base your donation on miles paddled then it’s the honor system if you decide to pledge a 25 cents, $1, or even $10 a mile.

WHERE & WHEN: On On October 30, 2018, the Bow South team will be launching from Diamond Creek in the Grand Canyon and paddling over 460 miles of the lower Colorado River south to Morales Dam on the United States / Mexico border. Some members of the team will have to end the trip early due to family or work obligations. Others will be joining the team along different sections of the river along the way. We should be arriving at Morales Dam around November 25.
